Biography
First Dutch astronaut. Flew on the 8-crew STS-61-A mission, the largest crew to fly in space at that time, conducting 75+ experiments aboard Spacelab.
Before NASANuclear physicist who earned his PhD from the University of Groningen in 1978 and was selected the same year as one of three ESA payload specialists for the Spacelab missions.

Fun fact
After leaving the astronaut corps he became professor of Aerospace for Sustainable Engineering at TU Delft and mentored the Nuon Solar Team that won the World Solar Challenge four times.
