Flight controllers and mission operations engineers operate spacecraft from the ground — issuing commands, monitoring telemetry, troubleshooting anomalies, and choreographing astronaut activities. NASA's Mission Control in Houston, ESA's ESOC in Darmstadt, JPL's Space Flight Operations Facility, and SpaceX's Mission Control Center are the marquee employers. It's the role that fuses operational discipline with deep systems knowledge.
Aerospace, electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering all work. Pure-math and physics also routinely hire in. ROTC + STEM degree is a common pipeline to NASA flight control.
NASA flight controllers come up through Boeing/L3Harris/Leidos contracts (KBR is the dominant ISS ops contractor). SpaceX Dragon ops, Rocket Lab Mission Control, Planet, Maxar, and Iridium also hire entry-level mission-ops engineers.
12–24 months of training: sim runs, oral exams, and sign-offs before sitting console as a primary. NASA's discipline tracks include ADCO, ROBO, OSO, SPARTAN, EVA, CATO, EECOM.
Career ladder: certified operator → backroom lead → Lead Flight Controller (e.g., Lead ADCO) → Flight Director. NASA selects ~1 Flight Director every 2 years from a pool of senior controllers.

The hardest part
Console certification is grueling. Sims are designed to break you — instructors throw simultaneous failures (loss of attitude control + thermal runaway + crew medical) and you have minutes to act. Many strong engineers wash out of certification despite passing every academic exam.
