Satellite operations engineers fly the unmanned half of the space industry — Earth observation (Planet, Maxar, ICEYE), comms (Starlink, OneWeb, Iridium, Viasat), navigation (GPS), and science satellites (Hubble, Chandra). With LEO megaconstellations now exceeding 8,000 satellites, this is the fastest-growing operations specialty.
RF/comms electives are gold for comms-sat roles; orbital mechanics electives matter for any operations role. Work on a CubeSat team in college if your school has one.
Planet, Maxar, Capella, BlackSky, ICEYE, Spire, Iceye, Iridium, Viasat, SES, Eutelsat, OneWeb, Astranis, Starlink. NewSpace shops will hire you with a CubeSat project; legacy primes (Northrop, L3Harris) prefer 1–2 years' prior experience.
Plan tasking (collect imagery / route comms), automate routine ops, troubleshoot anomalies, build constellation-scale tooling. Software-heavy — Python is the lingua franca.
Senior satellite ops engineers lead launch & early-orbit (LEOP) commissioning of new spacecraft, build the autonomy stack that lets one engineer fly 100+ satellites, or move into spacecraft systems engineering.
US-centric estimates. International compensation varies; agency-civilian roles tend to cap lower, commercial roles higher.

The hardest part
Constellations grow faster than tooling. You'll inherit a Python codebase glued together at midnight during a launch campaign, and your job is to industrialize it without breaking the active flight ops team. The cultural divide between 'flight is sacred, never touch it' and 'we ship daily' is real.
